The Facts of Oral Hygiene: Tooth Extractions

Posted .

Saving your smile after a tooth extraction is essential to ensure your mouth has the proper chance to heal. Even though tooth extractions may not seem like a complex and exhaustive procedure, nonetheless, your gums still need time to heal to prevent infections and delays with your recovery time.

Unhealthy habits can wreak havoc on your mouth, especially when recovering from oral health treatments such as tooth extractions. If you are a smoker, stop the habit for good, or if that is not possible, quit smoking for at least 2 full days before and after the extraction surgery. If inflammation arises, use an ice pack. In addition, be sure to take and medications as prescribed by your dentist. Do not eat or drink after surgery until the anesthesia has completely worn off, as it can increase your risk for choking.

Be sure to prepare your home and rest area for a successful recovery. Rest is a key factor of all recoveries, so do what you can to give your body a chance to rest, which includes avoiding exercising and gym visits. If you should happen to experience any problems along the way, be sure to contact your dentist.
