A Mild to Moderate Cavity May Be Just Right For Dental Inlays and Onlays

Posted .

If you have not heard much about dental inlays and onlays or any of the amazing benefits they can offer a tooth, our dentists would be happy to tell you more about these restorations. Dental inlays and onlays are often ideal for a mild to moderate cavity that doesn’t merit a dental filling or crown.

If a tooth has extensive structural damage, it often needs a dental crown to replace the majority of the structure, but if the damage is too minimal for a crown yet there is not enough structure left to support a dental filling, our dentist may recommend dental inlays or onlays to replace an appropriate amount of tooth structure. The function of inlays and onlays is very similar, in that they both treat tooth decay, but inlays are often placed when the cavity is still in the center of the tooth, and onlays may be needed if it has spread beyond the tooth cusps.

You and our dentist will determine if dental inlays and onlays are needed to preserve more of the healthy tooth structure. They are as durable as other dental restorations and, unlike some dental fillings, won’t shrink as time goes by and leave the tooth exposed. As long as you properly care for them, inlays and onlays can resists staining and last as long as 30 years.
